CopyCat Cafe: Making A Phone Call

Continues from here.

“Do you think I should ring them now?” I asked as I looked down at the time on Simon’s phone which was still sitting on the table and hadn’t gone into screen saver mode.

It was 7:37pm, Tom and I had just had a nice, but awkward dinner at my place. Nice because it was with Tom, awkward because of Simon’s unwelcome entry into my house and the subsequent dropping of his phone when my knee met with his balls after he tried something he knew he shouldn’t be doing. Made further awkward by me searching his phone and not only finding the photograph his wife had sent of me and him in bed but also finding more photographs of me and of his wife naked, or partially naked. And if that wasn’t enough I then found videos of us having sex, videos of him having sex with his wife, while we were dating and he was supposedly separated, and a video of me in the shower taken before I kneed him in the balls.

So all in all a really awkward situation especially given that most of this had happened in the presence of Tom, the wonderfully sweet guy I was currently dating and I think falling in love with. To his credit he neither tried to look at the content of the phone or made threatening comments about the person who took them, he simply sat in his chair offering his support and his comfort.

Tom had just assured me that whatever I decided to do with the phone and it’s contents that himself, Sonya and Tracy would be there for my support and for some reason my mind took that comment of Tom’s and the first thing it came up with was asking whether or not I should ring them at 7:30pm and tell them my sob story.

“Kat, it’s up to you. I’m sure they will be more than happy to help you do whatever, even if it’s just talk. And I honestly don’t know what else I can do other than support you…”

I understood why Tom’s response sounded a bit vague “Tom, honestly your support is more than enough.” I interrupted, still standing next to the table having not long before given Tom a kiss on the cheek for being so nice.

“I wish I could do more, but whatever I do is your call. I don’t want to make you feel any worse than you already do.” I was about to interrupt him again and tell him that he couldn’t possibly do that but he kept talking. “Sonya will probably want to kill him, or tear his nuts off, you know what those lesbians are like.” We both laughed, but it was a bit of a forced laugh. “But if you want to talk to your friends I am happy to leave you alone to do so. I can come back tomorrow.”

“Tom, please, don’t be so silly. I’m not hiding anything from you. I understand you don’t want to see the videos but you have already helped me by just being here and supporting me. Whatever Sonya, Tracy and I might talk about is not going to be a secret from you.” I stepped behind Tom, sitting in the chair at the table, bend down slightly, put my arms around his neck, crossing them over his chest and hugged him tightly before kissing him on the cheek again. He had given me so much. “Thank you so much, Tom!”

Although Tom was right about Sonya, threatening to kill Simon not rip his nuts off, although anything is possible, I decided I would ring her and talk to her anyway. Sonya had been my rock for many years, I was even closer to her than my own daughter since her father and I divorced, so while I wasn’t sure what Sonya could do to help the situation ringing her did seem like a natural thing to do. I sat down at the table where I’d eaten dinner and made the call.

“Hey Son, it’s me.” I said as the phone was answered at the other end.

“You’re interrupting my dinner, this better be good. Are you ringing to tell me I don’t have to come to work tomorrow?”

“Well you might want to take that option, I’m not sure I’m going to be very good to work with tomorrow.” I said.

“Why? What’s up? What’s Tom done?” Her voice trailed off as she called out to Tracy, something I had gotten used to when I spoke to Sonya on the phone. “Hey Trace, your straight husband has done something bad to my work wife!”

“Son, no, it’s not that. Son, talk to me.”

“Huh? What do you mean it’s not that?” her voice trailed off again. “Apparently it’s not Tom that’s upset her.”

In the background I heard Tracey’s voice say, “I knew he wouldn’t let me down!”

“Hey, you two, can we get back to me?” I said not in the least bit feeling self centered.

“Oh yeah,” Sonya said. “Hi Kat, what can I do for you?”

“I’ve got a bit of a problem.”

I did a quick recap of the afternoon’s events, at some point I heard Sonya put her phone on speaker so Tracy could hear it but she didn’t speak. To Sonya’s credit she barely interrupted at all while I told the story of what happened before dinner, maybe only three times, a record for her and when I got up to the point where Simon’s balls hurt she immediately came back with.

“You. Go. Girl! What a fucking prick, he deserves more than that. Yay for Tom showing up!”

“I just wanted him gone.” I said.

“Looks like you found a way to do that, even if you had to endure the bullshit before it.”

“Yeah but that’s not all…” I continued the story of what happened after dinner.

I didn’t speak in code but I also didn’t come straight out with everything. I’m not worried about people eavesdropping on phone calls, or the government tapping my phone so I guess it had a bit to do with embarrassment but whatever I said Sonya and Tracey understood. From the other end of the phone they too spoke with a naivety of details until the point where Sonya asked.

“What are you going to do?”

“I honestly don’t know. What do you think?” I asked.

“Rip his fucking balls off!”

I honestly couldn’t help myself, I went from serious Kat talking about an uncomfortable topic to laughing Kat unable to stop myself from being humored by Sonya’s words.

Less than a minute later the phone call was ended with Sonya saying they’d be at my house in ten minutes. I had no idea what we were going to do when they arrived but I knew we’d need wine or something heavier when they did.

  1. I still vote she go to the police or that her friends should be pushing her in that direction. At the very least to get a restraining order started. That was some scary shit and now we know it’s not him being dumb. Simon is dangerous.
